The Field Notes

Science. Storytelling. Stewardship.

The Field Notes began as a personal journal of observations and has grown into a collaborative digital publication. It is an exploration of the delicate threads that connect us to the natural world—from the hidden lives of grizzly bears in the Great Bear Rainforest to the quiet resilience of the fungi beneath our boots.

Each edition is a deep dive into the "why" behind the wild. I don't just share a photograph; I share the biological data, the cultural context, and the human stories that define our relationship with the land.

What you’ll find in each issue:

  • In-Depth Narrative: Moving past the headlines to explore the science of coexistence and ecosystem health.

  • The Guest Series: Conversations with the people on the front lines—biologists, photographers, Indigenous land defenders, and conservationists who are redefining our role as stewards.

  • The Ethics of the Lens: Honest reflections on the responsibility of wildlife photography and how we can document nature without disrupting it.

The Field Notes is more than an email; it is a community of people who believe that the first step toward conservation is understanding.

BC’s Bear Smart program is in limbo, and our black bears are paying the price.

For years, this program kept both people and bears safe. But recent provincial cuts and staffing shortages mean applications are stalled and oversight has disappeared. We can’t let this program fade into the background while conflict rates rise.

📢 Take Action: Contact the Minister of Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship today. Demand that they prioritize and refund the Bear Smart program.

The BC Wolf Cull

BRANDING(3).png
Culling Isn't Conservation: A BC Wolf Cull Initiative

Overview Culling Isn't Conservation is a multi-platform advocacy project designed to shift the narrative surrounding caribou recovery in British Columbia. For years, the provincial government has utilized the wolf as a scapegoat for the decline of caribou populations. This project pulls back the curtain on the reality of the BC wolf cull, using visual storytelling to highlight the true driver of ecological collapse: outdated industrial forestry practices.

The Mission
The goal of this initiative is to move the conversation from lethal "management" to long term stewardship. By focusing on the science of the trophic cascade and the impact of habitat fragmentation, this project empowers citizens to demand a modernization of BC forestry laws. We advocate for the protection of old growth forests and the restoration of industrial road networks over the use of aerial gunning and the unethical Judas Wolf method.

Project Deliverables & Assets

As part of this portfolio piece, I developed a comprehensive suite of advocacy tools designed for high engagement and public mobilization:

  • The Broken Balance Editorial: A deep dive article connecting the dots between industrial clear-cutting, predator superhighways, and the loss of biodiversity.

  • The Supporter Action Toolkit: A downloadable PDF resource featuring a "Fact vs. Fiction" guide, a stewardship comparison chart, and a scientific breakdown of the forest web.

  • Direct Advocacy Tool: A professional email template and strategy guide for citizens to communicate directly with the Minister of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship.

  • Social Media Campaign: A five slide educational carousel designed to dismantle common myths about the cull and drive traffic to the campaign command center.

  • Visual Storytelling: A curated series of wildlife and landscape imagery that documents the beauty of the BC wilderness and the stark reality of habitat loss.

Impact

This project serves as a bridge between conservation science and public action. It provides the average person with the professional language and tools needed to challenge the status quo and advocate for a forest where both wolves and caribou can thrive.
